    Introduction

The Kasr Al Aini – Cairo University Radiology Department is one of the most advanced departments in the University Hospital. It is uniquely positioned to provide services to all the departments of the hospital.

In addition to its main station located atManial Hospital, there are other several satellite units, in order to provide wider coverage, such as Manial Takhasosy, Abu El Reesh hospital, Monira hospital, Internal medicine building, El Malek Fahd unit, the French hospital and the New Emergency hospital.

The radiology department is divided into different subspecialized units in order to meet the different diagnostic goals of the hospital’s various departments. The resident and assistant lecturer rotations correspond to these divisions. This organization permits our radiologist to develop important relations with referring physicians and build clinical understanding that transcends a particular modality. These units represent the different internationally recognized radiology sub-specialties:

    •  Neuroradiology
    •  Head and neck radiology
    • Musculoskeletal radiology.
    • Cardiac imaging.
    • Chest imaging.
    • Gastrointestinal radiology.
    • Genitourinary radiology.
    • Vascular imaging and intenvention.
    • Doppler studies and Ultrasonography.
    • Women imaging.
    • Pediatric radiology.
    • Emergency unit.

The average number of radiological studies performed at Radiodiagnosis Department in Kasr Al Aini from the 30th of June 2015 the 30th of June 2016 were as follow: MRI: 14561, CT: 14891, Plain X-ray & Mammography: 183414, US: 11229, Doppler: 8615 , US Breast: 2643, Densitometry: 924 Angiography: 1393.

In addition to providing the hospital services, the Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology Department participates in well-designed under graduate and post graduate teaching courses for diagnostic and interventional radiology.

The Department of Radiology has long been dedicated to train future radiologists. It was the first in the country to establish a residency training program which is exclusively dedicated to enabling each resident to develop his or her skills to the highest capacity. The average number of residents accepted annually is 12 candidates. In addition a large number of visiting residents and trainee is accepted every year. The radiology residents spend 36 months of training during their residency. Every resident receives an education program to prepare him for his (Msc) in Radiology degree which is obtained when the candidate succeeds in passing two examinations (part I and II) and defending his thesis.

An MD program (Doctorate degree) is also established, the degree is obtained when the candidate fulfills two years of training, defends his thesis and succeeds in passing the doctorate examination.

The number of thesis defended during the academic year 2015-2016 is 41 MSc and 17 MD.

The continuing medical education at Radiology – Diagnosis Department is fulfilled through: Annual refreshing courses (for 1st & 2nd part of Msc), daily after noon lectures (film reading session), scientific weekly meeting (on Wednesday morning), Annual scientific conference (April/ May), thesis discussions and technical procedures (attending and performing techniques).

Radiological education resources are obtained from hard copy and the large digital radiology library of the department as well as computer based learning resources. Residents can check these out for self-learning during each subspecialty rotation.

Evaluation of Radiological Academic programs for Master’s (M.Sc.) and doctorate (M.D.) are measured for professional performance by accreditation bodies of different levels: self-assessment through: Medical Education Department Center (MEDC) at Cairo University, National assessment through: National Authority for Quality Assurance and Accreditation in Education. (NAQAAE), International assessment through: the world Federation for Medical Education (WFME). The internationally based standards for evaluation provide basis for national evaluation of radiology education enabling to improve and raise its quality which enhances the quality of health care both nationally and globally.

The radiology education program at Cairo University has a very good reputation. The number of applicants to this program, coming from Egypt and other countries in the Middle East region, increases annually and the graduates of this program are well received in clinical and academic practice nationally and internationally.

The official language of teaching and examinations is English.

Many articles based on research work that took place in Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology Department of Kasr Ainy Hospital have been published in prestigious North American as well as European journals.
